What functions does the 90-terminal ECM perform?

This electronic control module precisely regulates the air-fuel mixture, the ignition system, and coordinates the operation of key sensors such as the CKP, TPS, MAP, IAT, and ECT, among others. It is also responsible for activating and monitoring the injectors, ignition coils, and IAC valves.

Main components managed by the ECM

  • Injectors 1 to 4
  • Direct spark plug ignition coils
  • Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
  • CKP, TPS, MAP, IAT, ECT, O2 sensors
  • Fan and fuel pump relays

Models and years compatible with this computer

This 90-pin ECM computer is installed in the following models:

  • Nissan Platina – 1998 to 2004
  • Renault Clio – 1998 to 2004
  • Renault Kangoo – 1998 to 2004
  • Renault Laguna – 1998 to 2004
  • Renault Megane – 1998 to 2004

These vehicles use 1.4L and 1.6L engines, and are equipped with Siemens Sirius 32 ECM modules, renowned for their reliability and ease of diagnosis.

Nissan Platina ECM pinout and basic power supply

The ECM has a precise pinout. Some relevant pinouts are:

Bus TerminalDescriptionExpected voltage
30Battery power supply12 – 13 VCD
29Ignition feed12 – 13 VDC (with switch ON)
66Injection block relay12 VDC
3, 28, 33Lands of the system0 V

The ECM controls and receives information from strategically located components in the vehicle. Some of these are:

  • Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP)
  • MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure)
  • TPS sensor (throttle position sensor)
  • IAT (air temperature) sensor
  • ECT (engine temperature) sensor
  • Oxygen sensor (HO2S 1 and 2)

Other supervised systems

  • Vehicle speed
  • Fuel pump relay
  • CAN signals for automatic transmission
  • Anti-start system

Specific tests with a multimeter

The manual provides detailed instructions for checking the computer's condition using simple measurements:

1. Food and land

  • Terminal 30: constant battery voltage.
  • Terminal 29: Power supply with switch in ON.
  • Terminals 3, 28 and 33: The lands of the system must have good continuity.

2. Sensor signals

  • CKP: 1.4 – 2 VDC at idle.
  • GST: 0.2 – 0.9 VDC at rest, up to 4.5 VDC at full load.
  • MAP: 0.8 – 1.8 VDC at idle.
  • IAT: Reading between 4.5 and 5 VDC.
  • HO2S: Oscillation between 100 mV and 1 V.

3. Activation of actuators

  • Injectors: 53 V peak-to-peak (oscilloscope)
  • Coils: 195 V peak-to-peak (oscilloscope)
  • IAC: PWM signals according to engine RPM

Important notes and recommendations

  • This ECM is highly sensitive to false ground contacts.
  • Avoid replacing the module without first testing voltages and continuity.
  • The module is compatible with OBD-II scanner diagnostics.
  • Using tools like Check-22 facilitates functional testing.
