Based on the following reading, answer questions 11 to 20.

COMBING HEADS WITH MATHEMATICS

(1)

Who doesn't have a whirlpool on their head, that no matter how much time they spend on it, they can't comb it? (1) Well, the existence of said whirlpools has a mathematical explanation. Let's imagine a ball (a three-dimensional sphere) full of hair, with a hair at each point on its surface. When "combing" said ball, what we do is basically place each hair tangent to the ball itself.

(2)

This arrangement of vectors tangent to each point on the surface of the ball is called the field of vectors tangent to the sphere. Since our objective is to "comb" the entire ball, we would need the tangent vector (the hair) to be like one of those little arrows at all points (2). In terms of vectors, we would need the tangent vector to each point on the surface of the sphere to be different from the zero vector (thus we would have a tangent arrow). Well, the hairy ball theorem says that every field of tangent vectors on the sphere has at least one zero, that is, no matter how we comb, there will always be at least one point where we will come across a vortex(3).

(3)

Let's take the planet Earth as a sphere and the wind at each point on it as a vector field and at each point on it as a tangent vector field. By the hairy ball theorem, there will be at least one point on the surface of our planet that in the tangent vector will be the zero vector. That zero vector is a kind of little hole around which we would have the whirlpool, that is, a cyclone. Depending on how the wind blows (that is, depending on the field of tangent vectors there is), at a certain instant there could be more than one cyclone because the theorem says "at least one", but it does not give us an exact number(4 ) nor a maximum number.
